Chickens
Chickens really are the most incredibly amazing creatures, and their part in the TSH system is integral. Not only do their antics entertain us, and their glorious eggs feed us, but they are also our main earthmoving apparatus and household waste disposal system.
The chickens in the TSH system are housed in a planted, permanent chicken run (measuring approx. 40m2) with a large secure chicken coop. Plants within the coop include numerous banana plants, avocadoes, mulberries, wormwood, grapes, cho cho's, snow pear and capulin cherry. Adjacent to the permanent run is a small chicken tractoring run over annual vegetable garden beds. Each run is approx. 16m2 in size, and the chickens spend 3 months on each of the 4 beds (a 1 year cycle in all).
At the moment there are 24 birds in our flock, 23 spritely hens and 1 handsome cockeral. Breeds that are represented in our flock include Australorp, Rhode Island Red, Isa Brown Cross, Gold & Silver Campines.
